Presentation
Living in the charming valley of Valleraugue since January 2012 gave us some inspiration to invest some of our time in the potager (we make gardens and websites for a living).
We installed a rain-drop irrigation system and decided to get inspiration from organic techniques (hopefully we will implement an eco-forest system on other parts of the property…).
Location
Facing the Mont Aigoual, the history of this part of the ‘Cévennes Méridionales – southern Cevennes‘ is a rich one. The Mont Aigoual was completely reforested in the 19th century, a brillant film was like a revelation to me. I understood the devastating effects of heavy rains on a deforested mountain :
heavy rains: due to the conflicting weather (the mountain separates waters flowing to the Méditerranean sea and the Atlantic),
deforestation due to the pressure of the economy and pasturage.
Another caracteristic is the presence of terrasses: this unique character and its agro-pastoral eco-system has been written by the Unesco on the World Heritage list: ‘The Causses and the Cévennes, Mediterranean agro-pastoral Cultural Landscape’.
